Training sessions for Tristars and Youths (16 and under)
We organise two training sessions each weekend. Our Saturday sessions start at 10am and finish at either 11am or 11:30am, depending on the type of session and weather. The sessions are either cycling or running or a combination of these, held at various locations but our base is at The Oval Leisure Centre, Bebington. To help with bike maintenance and other club running costs there is a charge of £1 per child for these sessions. A programme of sessions is usually planned in blocks of two months with details being e-mailed out to members and also displayed on the club website – www.merseytri.org.uk
Swim sessions are held at the pool in the Oval Leisure Centre on Sundays from 3pm to 4pm. The charge for these sessions is £2 per child payable at poolside. To take part in a swim session, newcomers must first complete a trial comprising a 100m swim using a recognisable front crawl stroke in less than 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Trials can be arranged by contacting the coaching team email@example.com
All sessions are led by coaches qualified to Triathlon England level one (Assistant Coach) or level two (Session Coach) standard. The club is insured through Triathlon England, the governing body of the sport.
During school holidays we will often run ‘social’ rides which give us an opportunity to go on road rides with a stop at a café around half way through the ride. These usually start earlier and finish later than the regular sessions. When one of these rides is planned details will be forwarded by e-mail to members and parents.
At the Oval we have an assortment of bikes available for use by members. The popular ones are Islabikes of which we have 3 for 7/8 year olds, 8 for 9/10 year olds and four for 11/14 year olds, plus we have an assortment of other road bikes and mountain bikes of various sizes. These bikes can be loaned to members for training and racing.
The age range for racing is 8 to 16 years with age taken at 31st December in the year of competition. However, children under age 8 are welcome to join our sessions providing they can ride a bike or for swimming they must be able to complete the swim trial.
I hope this information gives newcomers a flavour of our sessions and will encourage all of you to turn up and take part. The first race in the annual NW Region race series is our own aquathlon at the Oval in early March followed by an open water aquathlon in June at Crosby and a pool based triathlon in early July at the Oval. There are also many other events to choose from in the NW Region throughout the season. We would encourage all of you to enter races, particularly the NW Club Championships. However, the emphasis is on taking part as one of the Mersey Tri team and supporting each other.
We look forward to meeting you at the sessions and the races.
The locations we use are as follows:
The Oval Leisure Centre, Old Chester Road, Wirral, CH63 7LF where there is ample free parking. On Saturdays we meet at our green storage containers located at the top end of the Astroturf pitch beyond the grandstand and on Sunday we meet on poolside in the main building.
Bidston Cycle Track. This is a traffic free tarmac circuit around the former landfill site. We meet in the retail park close to Junction 1 of the M53 and at the end of the car park furthest away from Halfords. Parents and Tristars/Youths should wait until everyone is registered, following which riders will be escorted to the track in an orderly manner.
Arrowe Park. Sessions here are run only. We meet in the car park on Arrowe Brook Road at the lower end of the football pitches.
Royden Park. Sessions here are run only. Meet in the car park: access is from Hillbark Road, Frankby, close to the junction with Montgomery Hill and the Farmers Arms pub.
Queen’s Park. Sessions here are run only. Meet in the park near to the bowling green. Access is best via Sandhey Road, off Meols Parade (Hoylake/Meols promenade). The south side of the park can be accessed from Birkenhead Road (A553) but parking is limited here.
Caldy Beach. Sessions here are run only. Access to the beach is via Melloncroft Road, off Caldy Road (B5141). At the lower end of Melloncroft Road, cross over the Wirral Way and meet in the field.
