Race Organiser’s Report
Well done to all those who managed to travel to the ‘Costa Del Wirral’ yesterday and were able to race in a balmy 7 degrees (good job it wasn’t today – Monday – freezing fog!). Whilst we missed those competitors who wisely didn’t travel from snow and ice bound homes, those who arrived enjoyed a great days racing which took place in a really good atmosphere that was generated by competitors, helpers and spectators.
It was great to see a good turnout in all categories, but particularly from the Youths. Numbers often fall away at this age, either because it is tough to keep training when other distractions take over in life, or because the lure of adult sprint races is starting to take hold. This said, we had 13 competitors who were prepared to slog it out and complete multiple laps of the run course (you have to be tough to keep going round and round and round!) and I feel that you can all take great credit for your efforts.
There is not one single competitor who shouldn’t look back on the event with pride; some stormed around the course, some battled out close finishes and some just kept going. If you got the stitch, burning lungs and/or felt sick at the start/middle or end (or all of them!) really well done – you didn’t give up – every single competitor who started also finished and everyone of you beat all those thousands of kids who couldn’t do it or couldn’t be bothered to do it.
A last thought – my favourite moment of the day was the arrival of the T1 boys onto the run course; I’ve never seen such a bunch of determined little guys giving it so much welly.
Polish your medals folks – you’ve earned them.
Hope to see you all back to do it all again (plus a bike ride) in the summer.
