Open water swimming
This is an integral part of Triathlon events – many of the events include open water swimming which can be in freshwater [such as lakes and rivers] or saltwater [such as marinas or dock areas].
Merseytri organises open water sessions for the benefit of its members.
*Membership is required and members will be able access more details during the season.
The season usually runs from late April to September. Plans for 2012 include-
Liverpool Docks (potential for alternative dock venue in 2012)
- Wednesday sessions
- Introduction to open water swimming sessions
Crosby Marina
- Monday and Saturday sessions
- Club Aquathon events [ swim followed by run]
Wirral
- Currently being investigated as an additional venue
Swim Safety
It is essential that before embarking on open water swimming that individuals are competent swimmers and can swim 1500m in a pool environment. This is due to much larger swim distances involved, fewer exit areas and the ability to adjust to a different swim environment and temperatures.
Wetsuits, swim hats and goggles are required as the water temperatures are significantly lower than swimming pools.
